Sheaf Domestic Abuse Services...

The Sheaf Domestic Abuse Project offers emotional, psychological/therapeutic and practical support to anyone who is suffering, or who has suffered domestic abuse.

We offer long term, holistic support to survivors to recover from their experiences of abuse, regain self-esteem and feel empowered, safe and secure enough to make choices and take back control of their lives.

The Sheaf Domestic Abuse Project is based within Sheffield and offers a wide range of services to men, women and children/adolescents.  We are able to meet the extensive needs of our service users within our three main project areas:

* Support/Advocacy Service

* Children and Young People’s Support

* Counselling & Therapy Service

We are the only specialist domestic abuse service in Sheffield to offer support for both male and female survivors of domestic abuse.

The Sheaf Domestic Abuse Service is also currently developing a sister project (The Janus Project) aimed at delivering intervention services for perpetrators of domestic abuse and aggressive/abusive men and women.

"Domestic Abuse can not be considered a gender issue in its entirety- it is a social issue, the actions and consequences of which, affect men, women, and children.
We cannot expect to find real solutions to the problem while it is treated solely as a gendered issue."

The Sheaf Holistic Approach

‘Holistic’ refers to the whole. It denotes considering the whole in order to gain a full, clear picture of a situation.

In order to view and heal a person holistically we must pay attention to the individual elements of a person's internal and external environment and bring healing to these areas also. If this is not done, and a problem is considered solely from one perspective , then lasting healing will not take place. Healing the individual and the family as a whole promotes lasting, meaningful growth and positive health.

At Sheaf, we believe in working with all elements of a survivour's world; whether they be female, male, or child. Our multi-professional service offers our service users the chance to explore and work through their practical and emotional situation to achieve positive outcomes.

By offering services providing support and intervention for adult survivours, children and adolescent survivours, and adult perpetrators, we are working effectively with all dynamics of the complex and multi-faceted nature of domestic abuse.

What is domestic abuse?

Domestic abuse is any incident, or pattern of controlling or threatening behaviour, violence or abuse (psychological, physical, sexual, financial, emotional or spiritual) between people who are or have been intimate partners or family members, regardless of gender or sexuality, disability, race or religion.

Such abusive behaviour can have very serious and lasting effects on a person's sense of self, well-being and autonomy.

Who does it affect?

Domestic abuse can be found in all walks of life and is an issue facing many families throughout every community, town and village and city in the UK and around the world. Domestic abuse occurs regardless of:

  • Social class
  • Education
  • Age
  • Physical ability
  • Cultural background
  • Sexual orientation
  • Gender
